Justice vs. Charity — An Honest Look at Community Service Curricula and Programs in Schools
What does community service really mean? How is its relevance different today than it was even five years ago? What are the current national trends regarding service programs? What is the difference between equity and equality? Why isn’t charity enough? What role should we play as individuals and as school and business communities in relation to the concept of social justice? What makes service truly effective in any community? How do we engage as many community members as possible in the effort to effect positive change without sending a message that sounds condescending or trite? This workshop establishes a venue in which participants wrestle with these questions and others.
