An Introduction to “The Set Up” — Emotional vs. Intellectual Literacy: How We Are Holding Our Kids Back from Personal Success.

Teens are set up to fail in today’s world. As schools become more and more academically competitive, we are eliminating the space and programs that allow adolescents to practice applying their own ethics, values, and decision-making. This fact has contributed to a national crisis in U.S. college campuses, as health centers cannot effectively staff the needs of their incoming freshmen concerning depression, anxiety, and addiction. As date rape and binge drinking statistics continue to rise on college campuses, high schools continue to graduate students with impressive GPA’s and little-to-no skills on how to care for themselves or each other when it counts. How do families and current teen culture add to this dilemma?

What can we do about this? This talk addresses some basic ways we can help our school communities, and more importantly, our teenagers to combat this trend.
